Progressive jackpots: where the money comes from and what the odds really are

A progressive jackpot is a prize that grows because a small slice of every stake is paid into a shared pot, until someone wins it and the meter drops back to its starting value. The prize can become very large, but the chance of landing it on any one spin is usually tiny, and the money feeding it comes out of the base game's RTP.

Where progressive jackpot money comes from

Each spin on a slot with a progressive jackpot moves a fixed percentage of the stake, known as the contribution rate, into the jackpot meter. The provider sets that percentage and rarely advertises it. When it is published, it is usually in the game's info or rules screen.

As an illustration, take a contribution rate of 1%:

  • A RM1.00 spin adds RM0.01.
  • A RM0.40 spin adds RM0.004.
  • If 50,000 spins averaging RM1 are played across the network in an hour, the meter rises by RM500 an hour.

A jackpot also has a seed value: a starting amount funded by the provider after each win so that the meter never restarts from zero. The figure on screen is the seed plus every contribution since the last win. Many slots run several tiers such as Mini, Minor, Major and Grand. The lower tiers are often fixed, and only the top one or two are truly progressive.

Network, local and must-drop jackpots

Jackpots differ by who feeds the same meter. The wider the pool of contributors, the bigger the prize and the less often it drops:

TypeWho contributesTypical sizeHow often it is won
StandaloneOne game onlySmallFairly often
LocalPlayers of one title on one platformMediumModerately
Network (wide-area)Players on many platforms using the same providerLargestRarely
Must-dropCan be any of the aboveHas a stated capDrops before a stated amount or time

Network jackpots grow fastest because large numbers of players on many sites feed the same meter. That is how they reach sums no single platform's jackpot could. The hidden price is that more contributors also means more people sharing the chance at one prize, so the odds per spin have to be very low.

A must-drop jackpot displays its limit, for example "drops before RM5,000" or "drops daily". That is more transparent, but the winner is still decided at random among qualifying spins. On SlotKaki, jackpot slots can usually be found through a filter or category in the game lobby; the exact label depends on the provider.

What the jackpot does to the base game's RTP

The RTP of a progressive slot is the sum of two parts: the base game's return and the jackpot's return. The contributions do not vanish, but they only come back to whoever lands the jackpot. For the vast majority of players, who never win it, the return they actually experience is the base-game RTP.

Expected cost per RM1,000 spun, if the jackpot is not wonRM40RM70

In this example you pay an extra RM30 for every RM1,000 spun in return for a small shot at a large prize. You can try your own numbers with the expected session cost by RTP calculator. Enter the base-game RTP rather than the total if you want to see what an ordinary session is likely to cost.

Some games also give larger stakes a higher jackpot chance, or only qualify bets above a certain size. Those rules are in the game's info screen and worth reading before you raise your stake.

Why the chance of winning a jackpot is so small

Providers rarely publish exact probabilities, so the figures below are purely illustrative, to show the scale. Suppose the top jackpot has a 1 in 10 million chance per RM1 spin, and you play 600 spins an hour.

Scenario (illustration)Number of spinsChance of winning at least once
One session of 1,000 spins1,000about 0.01% (1 in 10,000)
One hour a day for 30 days18,000about 0.18%
Three hours a day for a year657,000about 6.4%

The last row looks tempting until you price it. 657,000 spins at RM1 is RM657,000 staked. At a 93% base-game RTP, the expected cost is around RM46,000 for the year, and in roughly 94 cases out of 100 the jackpot never arrives. On average one win takes 10 million spins, which is about 16,700 hours at 600 spins an hour.

Two common misunderstandings:

  • "It hasn't dropped for ages, so it must be due." For an ordinary progressive jackpot every spin is independent. A high meter does not raise your chance on the next spin. The exception is a must-drop jackpot nearing its cap, and even then you are competing with everyone else spinning at the same moment.
  • "A huge jackpot makes the game worth it." A higher meter does raise the theoretical value of the jackpot share, but your chance stays just as small and the base game keeps wearing down the balance.

Keeping a level head around the jackpot meter

A meter ticking upwards is designed to hold your attention. A few ways to stay anchored to the numbers:

  • Treat the jackpot meter as decoration, not as a reason to play longer.
  • Choose your stake from the session budget, not from the jackpot's qualifying rules.
  • Work out the session cost with the base-game RTP before you start.
  • Set a deposit limit and time reminders in your account. The steps are in the responsible gaming guide.

Frequently asked questions

How does a progressive jackpot grow?

A small share of every stake on the linked games is added to the jackpot meter. At a 1% contribution rate, for example, a RM1 spin adds RM0.01. Once the jackpot is won, the meter resets to a seed value funded by the provider and starts climbing again.

Is a jackpot that has not dropped for a long time easier to win?

Not for an ordinary progressive jackpot. Every spin has the same chance however long the meter has been rising. Only a must-drop jackpot, which shows a cap on amount or time, becomes more likely to drop as it approaches that cap.

Does a progressive jackpot lower the RTP?

It need not change the total RTP, but it splits it. Part of the RTP is diverted to the jackpot, so the base-game RTP is lower. For players who do not win the jackpot, the return they experience is that lower base-game figure.
