Asian handicap explained: whole, half and quarter lines

Asian handicap gives one team a head start or a deficit of virtual goals before kick-off, which takes the draw out of the bet. Whole lines (0, 1) can finish level and refund your stake, half lines (0.5, 1.5) always win or lose, and quarter lines (0.25, 0.75) split your stake into two equal halves.

Why football handicaps exist

In association football, the two teams are rarely equal. When Team A is much stronger, the 1X2 market offers short odds on A and long odds on B. A handicap evens things out: the favourite starts with negative goals and the underdog with positive goals, until both sides are priced close to each other, usually somewhere around 1.85 to 2.05 in decimal odds.

A minus sign (-) means the team gives goals. A plus sign (+) means the team receives them. If the home side is -1, the away side is +1 on the same line. The handicap is applied to the final score, normally the 90 minutes plus stoppage time, with no extra time or penalty shoot-out. Check the market rules on your slip, because special markets can work differently.

Every example below uses decimal odds so the sums are easy to follow. If your screen shows Malay or Hong Kong odds, the guide to reading odds formats shows how to convert them.

Whole and half lines: win, lose or refund

A whole line is a round number such as 0, 1 or 2. If the score after the handicap is level, the bet is a push and your stake goes back to your balance.

  • 0 (level ball): you win if your team wins, get your stake back on a draw and lose if your team loses. It is the same as draw no bet.
  • -1: your team must win by 2 or more. Win by exactly 1 and the stake is refunded. Draw or lose and the bet loses.
  • +1: you win if your team wins or draws, get a refund if it loses by 1, and lose if it loses by 2 or more.

A half line ends in .5, so a level score after the handicap cannot happen. The bet either wins in full or loses in full.

  • -0.5: the same as backing your team to win in normal time.
  • +0.5: wins if your team wins or draws.
  • -1.5: your team has to win by 2 or more, with no refund in between.

Quarter lines: your stake is split in two

A quarter line (0.25, 0.75, 1.25 and so on) is two bets in one. Your stake is divided equally between the two neighbouring lines. Some sites print it as a pair, such as 0/0.5 or 0.5/1, which means exactly the same thing.

Line shownFirst half of stakeSecond half of stake
-0.25 (0/0.5)0-0.5
-0.75 (0.5/1)-0.5-1
-1.25 (1/1.5)-1-1.5
+0.25 (0/0.5)0+0.5
+0.75 (0.5/1)+0.5+1

Each half is settled on its own and the results are added together. That is why bet history sometimes shows "half won" or "half lost".

Example 1: RM100 on the home side at -0.25, odds 1.90. The match ends 1-1. The RM50 on the 0 line is refunded and the RM50 on -0.5 loses. You get RM50 back, a net loss of RM50.

Example 2: RM100 on the home side at -0.75, odds 1.90. Home win 2-1. The RM50 on -0.5 wins and returns RM95. The RM50 on -1 ends level after the handicap, so that RM50 is refunded. You receive RM145 in total, a net profit of RM45.

Example 3: RM100 on the away side at +0.25, odds 1.95. The match ends 0-0. The RM50 on 0 is refunded, and the RM50 on +0.5 wins, returning RM97.50. You receive RM147.50, a net profit of RM47.50.

Results table by final score

This table shows how a bet on the home team settles on each common line. "Half won" means half the stake wins at full odds and the other half is refunded. "Half lost" means half loses and half is refunded.

For the away side, read the table the other way round. Away +0.75, for example, wins in full on a draw or an away win, is half lost if the home team wins by 1, and loses in full if the home team wins by 2 or more.

In ringgit, for RM100 at odds of 1.90: full win +RM90, half won +RM45, refund RM0, half lost -RM50, full loss -RM100. For other scores and prices, try the Asian handicap calculator.

One more point for bets placed during a match: the handicap usually counts only goals scored after your bet is accepted, as if the score at that moment were 0-0. The sportsbook provider sets this rule, so read the market description before confirming the slip.

Handicap vs 1X2: same match, different packaging

The 1X2 market has three outcomes: home win (1), draw (X) and away win (2). Asian handicap cuts that down to two, either by refunding on a draw or by adding virtual goals.

Several lines are really other markets in disguise. Home -0.5 is the same as "1" in 1X2, away +0.5 is the same as "X or 2", and the 0 line is draw no bet. A handicap is not an easier game; it is the same result arranged differently.

Whatever the market, the odds already contain the provider's margin, and a handicap does not change the real chance of a team winning. For an overview of other sports markets and how a bet slip works, read the guide to online sports betting.

Frequently asked questions

What does a 0.25 handicap mean in football?

A 0.25 line splits your stake in two: half on the 0 line and half on 0.5. Backing a team at -0.25, a win pays in full and a draw is half lost. Backing a team at +0.25, a draw is half won, meaning half wins and half is refunded.

What is the difference between a -0.5 and a -1 handicap?

At -0.5 your team only needs to win by any margin for the bet to win. At -1, a one-goal win refunds your stake, and you only win if the team wins by two or more. A draw or a defeat loses on both lines.

What happens to a handicap bet if the match is postponed?

Usually the bet is void and the stake refunded if the match is not played within the time set by the sportsbook provider's rules. If a match is abandoned partway through, different rules may apply. Check the rules section and your bet history in the account.

Is Asian handicap more profitable than 1X2?

No. Asian handicap only arranges the outcomes of a match differently and reduces the choice to two sides. Both markets have the provider's margin built into the odds, so neither gives the player an advantage over the long run.
