How to play baccarat, from the first card to the scoreboard

To play baccarat you make one choice before the cards come out: Banker, Player or Tie. The dealer gives each side two cards, a third card is drawn by a fixed table of rules, and the hand closest to 9 wins. Once your chips are down, there is nothing else for you to decide.

Card values and how a baccarat hand is scored

Every card in baccarat has a fixed value. A hand's score is the last digit of its total, so the highest possible score is 9 and no hand can "bust" the way it does in blackjack.

CardValue
Ace1
2 to 9face value
10, J, Q, K0

A few examples: 7 and 8 make 15, so the hand scores 5. A king and a 9 score 9. A 6 and a 4 make 10, which scores 0.

If either Player or Banker scores 8 or 9 with the first two cards, that is a natural. Both sides stop there and nobody draws a third card. Most live tables deal from eight decks shuffled together in a shoe, and the probabilities on this page are for eight decks.

When the third card is drawn for Player and Banker

The dealer or the RNG software applies the third-card rule automatically. You do not need to memorise it, but it explains why a round ended the way it did.

Player goes first

  • Total of 0 to 5: Player draws a third card.
  • Total of 6 or 7: Player stands.
  • Total of 8 or 9: a natural, and the round is over for both sides.

Then the Banker

If Player stood on 6 or 7, Banker draws on 0 to 5 and stands on 6 or 7. If Player drew a third card, Banker follows this table:

Banker totalBanker draws when Player's third card isBanker stands when Player's third card is
0, 1, 2any cardnever
3anything except 88
42 to 7A, 8, 9, 10 or a picture card
54 to 7A, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10 or a picture card
66 or 7anything other than 6 or 7
7neverany card

Worked round: Player is dealt a 2 and a 3, a total of 5, so Player draws and gets a 7. That makes 12, which scores 2. Banker holds a 3 and a king, a total of 3. Player's third card was a 7, not an 8, so Banker draws and receives a 4. Banker 7 beats Player 2.

Second example: Player holds a jack and a 6, a total of 6, and stands. Banker holds a 4 and an ace, a total of 5. Because Player did not draw, Banker draws on 5 and gets a 3. Banker 8 against Player 6.

Banker, Player and Tie: commission and house edge

The house edge is the average share of each bet the game keeps over the long run. The three main baccarat bets pay differently and carry different edges:

BetChance of winningPayoutHouse edge
Banker45.86%1:1 minus 5% commission1.06%
Player44.62%1:11.24%
Tie9.52%8:114.36%

Banker wins slightly more often because it acts after Player, and its third-card rule takes Player's card into account. The 5% commission is there to offset that small advantage. When the result is a Tie, Banker and Player bets are returned in full.

In ringgit: a winning RM100 Banker bet makes RM95 profit, so RM195 comes back to your balance including the stake. A winning RM100 Player bet makes RM100. A winning RM10 Tie bet at 8:1 makes RM80, and the RM10 stake is returned as well.

No-commission tables pay Banker 1:1 but pay only half on a Banker win with 6 points, for an edge of about 1.46%. Tables that pay 9:1 on the Tie cut that bet's edge to roughly 4.84%. The rules panel lists the actual payouts.

As an expected cost: 100 hands at RM50 on Banker is RM5,000 in total stakes, and 1.06% of that is about RM53 over the long run. A single session can land far from it.

Reading the big road and bead plate

The scoreboard next to the table records the results from the current shoe. It is handy for seeing what has already happened, but it cannot tell you what comes next.

  • Bead plate: each result fills one cell, top to bottom, then the next column to the right. Red is usually Banker, blue Player and green Tie. It is the easiest record to read.
  • Big road: repeated results stack downwards in one column. When the winner changes, a new column starts to the right. A Tie does not get its own cell; it is marked as a green slash on the most recent cell.
  • Big eye boy, small road and cockroach road: derived boards that compare the column patterns of the big road. They are calculated from the same results, so they hold no new information about the next card.

Example: the sequence Banker, Banker, Player, Tie, Player, Banker. On the big road the first column holds two red cells. The second column holds two blue cells, with a green slash across the first blue one. The third column starts with a single red cell.

Use these boards to check that results match your bet history. They are a record, not a forecast.

Mistakes new baccarat players tend to make

  • Chasing streaks. Five Banker wins in a row do not make Player "due". The make-up of the shoe does shift slightly after each round, but the effect is far too small to use.
  • Staking heavily on the Tie. An 8:1 payout looks generous, yet a 14.36% edge is more than 13 times the Banker edge.
  • Forgetting the commission. A RM100 Banker win adds RM95, not RM100. Check your balance after each round so your budget sums stay accurate.
  • Ignoring what side bets cost. Pair bets pay a lot because they rarely land, and their edge is usually far higher than on the main bets.
  • Playing too fast. Live rounds are short, and more rounds per hour means more money staked. Set a time limit and budget first.
  • Assuming every table is the same. RNG and live baccarat share the drawing rules, but limits, commission and Tie payouts vary by table.

Before choosing a table, read how RNG table games work and how live casino works. Terms such as shoe, natural and squeeze are explained in the live casino glossary.

Frequently asked questions

Which baccarat bet has the lowest house edge?

Banker, at about 1.06% on an eight-deck table with 5% commission. Player is about 1.24% and the Tie at 8:1 about 14.36%. A lower edge means a smaller average cost per hand, not a way to make money.

Why is there a 5% commission on Banker wins?

The third-card rule gives Banker a slight advantage because it acts after seeing Player's cards. Without a commission, Banker would win more often than it pays. Taking 5% from Banker wins rebalances the payout so the game keeps a small house edge.

Can the baccarat scoreboard predict the next result?

No. The big road, bead plate and derived boards only rearrange past results. Each round depends on the cards that come out of the shoe, and coloured patterns on the board do not change the chances of Banker, Player or Tie.

What does a natural mean in baccarat?

A natural is a total of 8 or 9 from the first two cards of Player or Banker. When either side has one, no third card is drawn and the round settles at once. A natural 9 beats a natural 8; two equal naturals are a Tie.
